With awful weather all week it didn’t look promising for a full weekend of uninterrupted cricket. With the first team away at Thornham it looked more likely that it would be the second team who got a game in. However this wasnt the case, the second team was called off quite early so everyone travelled up to Thornham to watch our new pro Michael Swart make his debut. A reduced overs game (20/20) started and Mr Swart certainly entertained. After a tentative first over of one run he went on to hit 18 off the second over and ended his innings on 44 after a run out. We reached 174 with Scott Allen, Solomon Mohammed and Karl Taylor also chipping in with useful runs. Proving himself to be a real all rounder, Swart then took 3 wickets and Thornham could only reach 111 off their overs. A great 4 point start to the season. Unfortunately the rain came again and Sundays home game against new boys Stretford was called off before a ball was bowled. The second team had more luck with their game starting on time. They bowled Stretford out for 80 and on a ground where boundaries were in short supply they reached the target with 5 wickets down. Notable performances from Saf Ismail (36 not out) Ryan Halpin (23) and great bowling also from Ryan (4 for 23 off 12) and Saj Nadeem (3 for 0 off 2) meant a welcome 5 points for them.
Just a reminder that this years signing on night will be Monday 16th April 2012. Weather permitting this will also be the first training night for the U9-U15s. Doors will open at 6pm. Junior membership remains at £10 for the U9s and £12.50 plus £5 social membership for all other age groups. Senior membership remains unchanged at £40 signing on and £5 social membership.
For the season 2011 we only had two teams in the league, however for the 2012 season we will also be playing a third team and considering the players now available our new 3rd team captain Ryan Bardsley will have plenty to choose from.
